“Happy Maslenitsa week! Your Montesha’s speaking. I’ve been eating this tasty Swiss pancake, when my assistants told me it’s Maslenitsa week now. Have you ever heard of it? No worries, I’m going to explain it to you.

(Russian Translation:

“С масленицей всех! Ваша Монтеша на связи! Ела я тут швейцарские блины, а мне напомнили: Масленица ведь! Мне стало интересно, а откуда пошёл праздник, как именно он празднуется. И вот, что я узнала.)

Maslenitsa is an ancient folk and religious holiday in Eastern Slavic countries. It dates back to 2nd century A.D, which means it’s probably the oldest surviving Slavic holiday. It started as a pagan tradition. It was a sun festival to celebrate the imminent end of the winter. Later it was adopted into Christian tradition, it happens in the last week before the onset of Great Lent.

During the Lent Orthodox Christians are not allowed to eat any animal products, except fish on some days. During the week of Maslenitsa, meat is already forbidden, but milk and eggs are allowed. That’s why the traditional food for Maslenitsa is pancakes. The Great Lent forbids any fun, so Maslenitsa is a chance to take part in social activities before the onset of the Lent.

Масленица – праздник очень старый. Согласно археологическим находкам, его праздновали еще во втором веке нашей эры. Таким образом, это – один из самых древних праздников в славянской культуре. Он начинался ещё в языческие времена, как праздник солнца, отмечание приближающейся весны. Позже он был принят и в христианство. Масленица празднуется в течении недели до начала Великого Поста.

В течении Поста не разрешается есть животную пищу, кроме рыбы по некоторым дням. В неделю Масленицы есть мясо уже нельзя, но всё ещё можно есть молочные продукты и яйца. Поэтому и сложилась традиция печь блины и делиться ими. Во время Великого Поста не разрешаются бурные гуляния, поэтому неделя Масленицы – это шанс погулять и повеселится перед Постом.)

In some regions, each day of the week is devoted to a special activity. On Monday people make a large doll, a symbol of Lady Maslenitsa. They later burn it on Sunday, and the ashes are buried to fertilise the soil for crops. That Sunday is also called “Forgiveness Sunday”, the day when people ask each other for forgiveness.

В некоторых регионах, каждый день праздничной недели посвящён какому-то определенному делу. Так, в понедельник делают и наряжают чучело, а в воскресение его сжигают. Считается, что пепел послужит удобрением будущему урожаю. Воскресение в неделю Масленицы так же называется “Прощёным Воскресением”. Это день, когда близкие могут попросить друг у друга прощения.)

During Soviet times Maslenitsa wasn’t celebrated officially, but people still made pancakes to share them with friends. The celebrations resumed after the start of perestroika.

Agent Monte 002 in the Swiss Alps / Агент Монте 002 в швейцарских Альпах

Agent Monte 002 stayed in this chalet in Les Diablerets, a village in the Swiss Alps.

(Russian Translation: Агент Монте 002 остановилась в деревне Les Diablerets, в швейцарских Альпах, вот в таком домике.)

Les Diableret is a very beautiful place. People come to the region to ski in winter and to go hiking and trekking in summer.

(Russian Translation: Это очень красивый регион. Туристы приезжают туда зимой кататься на лыжах, а летом совершать горные прогулки.)

There, Montesha spotted this Bernese Mountain Dog. The dog lives on the farm in the Alps, helps the owners to meet visitors who come to buy milk and cheese, and protects horses and one little donkey.

(Russian Translation: Там Монтеша заметила вот эту бернскую овчарку. Она живет на ферме в Альпах, помогает по хозяйству, встречает гостей, которые приезжают за молоком и сыром, а также, присматривает за лошадьми и осликом.)

Montesha says everything looks idyllic there: happy loved animals, careful loving pet owners (no smokers!) and pristinely clean places, no plastic bags flying around in the wind. In fact, it’s hard to see any plastic bags at all, people use their own bags to carry products. All waste is of course sorted and recycled. The green container is a social box. People can leave there toys and clothes for poor families.

(Russian Translation: Монтеша говорит всё выглядит просто идеально: счастливые животные, ответственные хозяева (нет курильщиков!), идеально чистые улицы, по которым не летают пластиковые пакеты. Пластиковые пакеты, вообще, сложно где-то заметить. Все носят покупки в своих сумках, а не в пластиковых пакетах. И, конечно, весь мусор сортируется и перерабатывается. Зелёный контейнер на фото – социальный. Там можно оставить игрушки и одежду для малоимущих семей. )

The following day Montesha went to explore a glacier, 3000 meters above the sea level. It was icy and white there. Montesha was busy helping clean the snow.

(Russian Translation: На следующий день Монтеша отправилась на ледник, на 3000 метров над уровнем моря. Наверху всё было белое и ледяное. Монтеша помогала очищать снег.)

She also sent a thank you note to Kate from there. Kate became our first reader who donated to Montes’ shelter.

(Russian Translation: А ещё она написала записку для Кейт. Кейт стала первой нашей читательницей, которая сделала перевод в приют Монтеши.)

Together with her assistant, Montesha visited the only suspension bridge in Europe that’s that high up in the mountains.

(Russian Translation: Вместе со своим ассистентом Монтеша посетила самый высокогорный мост в Европе между двумя вершинами.)

At some point, the weather started to change. Montesha and her companions had to be taken back to their gondola lifts by snowmobile teams. The gondola, which can fit up to 125 people, took them back to land and safety.

(Russian Translation: Внезапно погода начала меняться. Спасатели на снегоходах доставили Монте 002 и её ассистентов обратно к гондоле. К слову, одна гондола вмешает в себя 125 человек. Гондола доставила всех туристов в целости и сохранности обратно на землю.)

Great St Bernard Pass / Перевал Большой Сен-Бернар

Agent Monte 002 crossed Great St Bernard Pass. The place is famous for a shelter founded there by monks in 9th century. The pass has some of the highest peaks in the Alps. Back then, those places were unsafe because of the difficulty of the terrain, the amount of snow and bandits roaming the territories. That’s why the monks also kept and bread St. Bernard dogs, who were large enough to traverse the deep snow and had a good sense of smell to rescue lost people. A legend also says they carried a small barrel with liquor around their necks, as it was believed the liquor had healing properties. The last recorded rescue by a St.Bernard dog happened in 1955.

(Russian Translation: Агент Монте 002 пересекла Перевал Большой Сен-Бернар. Это место известно тем, что здесь появился первый приют для потерявшихся путников. Он был основан монахами монастыря, который существует на перевале с 9 века. В этом районе очень много высоких альпийский пиков. В прошлом, эти места были небезопасны из-за сложности местности, снегов и разбойников. Для того, чтобы спасать путешественников монахи разводили огромных сенбернаров. Они специально выводили огромных собак с отличным нюхом, чтобы те могли легко перемещаться по глубоким снегам и находить потерявшихся людей. По легенде, у каждой собаки был так же бочонок с ликером, который считался тогда отличным лекарством. Последний задокументированный случай спасения человека сенбернаром произошёл в 1955 году.)

Today due to the tunnel and modern technologies the rescue operations of the shelter became mainly unneeded. It became too costly to keep the dogs. As a result, in 2004 the dogs were bought by two foundations organized specially for the dogs. There are now three or four dozens of dogs and they continue to be bread and sold with one condition that the dog would be brought to the territories of the shelter for summer. So if you visit the Great St Bernard Pass in summer you are likely to see huge St.Bernard dogs romping around the slopes.

(Russian Translation: В наши дни, благодаря построенному тоннелю и современным технологиям, необходимость в таких спасательных операциях отпала. Содержать собак стало очень дорого. Поэтому, в 2004 году сенбернары были выкуплены двумя, специально созданными для них организациями. Сейчас у этих организаций примерно пол сотни собак. Эти организации продолжают разводить и продавать сенбернаров, с условием, что каждая проданная собака будет возвращаться на территорию монастыря летом. Поэтому, если будете посещать эти места летом, можете увидеть гигантских сенбернаров, рассекающих альпийские поля.)

Agent Monte 002 in Aosta / Агент Монте 002 в Аосте

Following an old road of the Franks, Agent Monte 002 reached Aosta, an Italian city near the border with France and Switzerland. It’s a very old town founded by Romans in the Italian Alps. Aosta is the principal city of Aosta valley, which is the most mountainous and the least populated region in Italy.

(Russian Translation: По древней дороге франков Агент Монте 002 достигла Аосты, итальянского города на границе с Францией и Швейцарией. Аоста – очень старый город, основанный римлянами в Итальянский Альпах. Это – главный город региона Аоста, самого горного и менее всего населенного района Италии.)

Monte has discovered that people in Aosta love animals. Many people have pets. There are dogs on the leashes everywhere! It’s obvious that those dogs are well behaved, that they have responsible owners and that they love their owners and this love is mutual.

(Russian Translation: Монте говорит, что люди в Аосте любят животных. Везде можно увидеть собачек на поводках. Все они очень разные, но воспитанные, а хозяева у них ответственные и очень их любят.)

 

 

 

There was even a dog shop assistant in a sport shop! His name was Leon. He loved meeting doggies from different countries. He and Montesha had a lot of fun. She also told him why she was there. She explained that she travels to raise awareness about her shelter in Montenegro, that her shelter relies only on donations from the public and that unless she finds help, there won’t be a possibility to save more animals.

(Russian Translation: Даже продавец в магазине спортивной одежды – собака, золотистый ретривер по имени Леон. Леон любит, когда к нему в магазин заходят собачки из разных стран. Они отлично провели время с Монте. Монте рассказала ему, что привело её в Аосту. Она объяснила, что отправилась путешествовать, чтобы найти помощь для своего приюта в Черногории. Только обычные люди помогают приюту, а не какие-нибудь большие организации или правительства. Поэтому, если агенты Монте не найдут помощи, многие новые животные не смогут быть спасены, так как сейчас на это нет средств.)

Agent Monte 002 sent us photos from a pet boutique. There were so many posh clothes and other luxurious items for pets. It was a real fashion house for pets!

It’s a bitter-sweet feeling to see at all those photos, to realize that those caring dog owners cannot even fathom leaving their dog in the woods to die because the dog went blind and deaf. But that’s exactly what happened to Eelay, a new resident of Monte’s shelter. Nuns of a monastery noticed him scratching his face off against spikes and bushes in the forest, and called the shelter. He’s now staying directly in the room of the shelter’s owner. Every time she leaves his side, he cries. He sleeps only when he feels her hand. Eelay didn’t get blind as a puppy, so he can’t orienteer in the room yet. He knocks things over and hits himself against objects, but he still walks on the leash, rides quietly in the car and tries very much to be a good boy, just like those good boys in the photos that Monte sent us from Italy. He could have been one of those pets, loved and cherished, and taken to dog boutiques, but he was born in the wrong country. Eelay is up for adoption. Please, give him a chance to feel what it is like to be a pet of a caring owner. If you can’t adopt him, please, donate to the shelter. Eelay’s treatment will be very expensive and the shelter already counts every penny. All donations and expenses appear in the comments to this post.

Монашки монастыря увидели как он бродит по кругу в лесу, обдирая лицо о колючки и ветки и позвонили в приют. Сейчас Илай живет в одной комнате с владелицей приюта, Жанной. Он не может оставаться один. Каждый раз, когда Жанна отходит от него, он начинает плакать. Он может спать, только если чувствует её руку. Илай ослеп не щенком, поэтому он ещё не научился ориентироваться в пространстве – сшибает предметы и обо всё стукается. Он всё равно отлично ходит на поводке и спокойно ездит в машине. Илай очень старается быть хорошей собакой, как те собачки с итальянских фотографий. Он мог бы быть одним из них, любимым и нужным, и его водили бы за покупками в собачьи бутики, но он родился не в той стране. Илаю ищется дом. Дайте ему шанс узнать, что такое настоящий хороший хозяин. Если вы не можете его взять, пожалуйста, пожертвуйте любую сумму приюту по Paypal или по реквизитам. Expedition report

Monte’s assistant Olga spoke to Mission Monte about the expedition to “Iron Gates”, a geological reserve in Pinega.

“Trips to Pinega for me are always about me challenging myself, a person spoiled by daily showers, clean clothes, always available electricity and soft comfy bed. The most difficult part though is to find the courage to buy tickets to Arkhangelsk. As soon as you are in the snow covered woods of Pinega, you start loving it.”

This time there were nine people in the team. They were quite a mixed group; programmers, civil servants, managers, a professor, a lawyer and even school kids. The youngest members of the team were 14 years old. There were also other animals: a setter called Afina and another dog called Asya.

“This expedition wasn’t aimed at making any discoveries, we were visiting the caves for our own enjoyment and fun, although the newbies made lots of their own discoveries, from specifics of a life in a cabin to speleological cave trips.”

The team reached their cabins by Buran snow-mobiles. More people joined the expedition later on, so there were different arrangements on the way back; team members loaded their bags on the snow mobiles, and jogged all 12 kilometres back.

Together they lived in cabins with no electricity, running water or heating for eight days. In such conditions it’s important that the team works well together.

“A group is considered highly organized when it starts functioning in unison from the very beginning. That’s how it was for us. As soon as we arrived, Leonid started making a fire in the stove that had been unused for a long time. Gleb, another member of our team, was sorting our food and hanging the supplies on the wall so that mice wouldn’t reach it. He also became a chef of the expedition. I was swiping away mouse turds, which were in abundance there. I quickly wiped tables with highly valuable wet tissues, swept the floors, got rid of garbage. Just one hour after we arrived in our cabin, it was all cosy and warm inside, and there was soup on a portable gas stove. The expedition officially started!”

The first days the team was focusing on making the paths to the caves, pressing the snow down with their snow shoes. They had to do it during the short northern day light, which now lasts from 9:30 a.m. to 2:20 p.m.

We had to make ways getting stuck in soft wet snow up to our knees. As a result we would return to our cabins all drenched.

 

This year the team wasn’t very lucky with the weather, it was too warm and everything was melting. The access to some caves wasn’t possible due to too much water.

The obvious advantage was that we could make snowmen and that the forest looked like a fairytale.

Nevertheless, the speleological team managed to visit Olympic cave, and some members even reached Symphony cave, even though they had to walk twenty-five kilometres both ways. Monte visited Olympic cave. He was courageously sitting in Olga’s jacket, keeping her warm in the cold cave, which wasn’t that easy to explore.

You need to crawl first on your fours, then totally flat on the ground. You have to climb the walls like a spider-man, while risking to crash down into the underground river. It was hard for me, the sweat was running down my face, but Monte managed to deal with it all perfectly. He kept up with the group and organized photo shoots during the short periods of rest.

 

Olga said worried friends often ask her how it was possible to live with no running water, electricity or heating. She said it was all “fairly easy”.

“Water

You melt snow and use it instead of water. It’s hard to quench your thirst with such water, that’s why you should add salt to it.

At the end of the expedition we even managed to make a sauna. We got water from a frozen river that had a slight smell of stink damp, but the smell scared nobody after six days with no available shower.

Light

You get light outside and indoors from headlamps only. There are also some gas lamps. Batteries run out very quickly. Just to illustrate how quickly: a family of four used sixty batteries in five days.

Heat

All the heat comes from a wood burning oven. There’s no life without fire – you can think of this only here. Fire gives you warmth and food.

Garbage

We sorted and burned all garbage. We brought back only glass and metal cans.

Sleeping arrangements

There are double deck wooden beds. Five people can live in one cabin with basic comfort. Everybody sleeps in a sleeping bag. It’s tough and spartan.”

Monte socialized a lot during the expedition, he made many new friends.

“We all spent evenings at our dinner table, talking, playing games. Truth be told though, Monte didn’t manage to become good friends with Afina the setter who would always try to chew his paw off. We had fun during our snowy Pinega vacation for more than a week. Monte now has unforgettable memories that he will be sharing with you.”
